Besides handling the “Graphics component remote code execution” security issue, it also includes a few nonsecurity fixes, and 2 new features – though i haven’t found any technical information pertaining to the 2 new features, which are

With that rant out of the way, let’s have a look at the actual update. Inevitable when marketing trumps technical facts i guess J Nonsecurity fixes Looking at the Kb article it seems that Microsoft, isn’t too clear which of the 2 “versions” of Skype for Business, the nonsecurity fixes are related to. The Lync 2013 “SfB” or Skype for Business though they only relate to the “Lync 2013” version of SfB, though the security update is relevant for both versions. Lync 2013 or SfB – Relevant parts of the update This version of Skype for Business is 16.0 and is a part of Office 2016 code base. The first “real” Skype for Business client was introduced in Office 2016. This version of Lync / Skype for Business is version 15.x and is a part of the Office 2013 code base. With the update was a half-hearted attempt to allow organizations to keep the Lync 2013 UI, only the end-user would still experience a different Lync 2013 than they were used to, forcing a minimum level of Change Management, as both sounds and icons were changed despite making the adjustments to keep the “Lync 2013” UI. As the upgrade was included in a security update, organizations were forced to adapt to the new Skype for Business UI. The original Lync 2013 client, was “upgraded” to Skype for Business via the April 2015 Security update. Right now you basically have 2 versions of Skype for Business client. Lync 2013 client vs Skype for Business clientĮver since Microsoft decided to “re-brand” the Lync 2013 to Skype for Business some confusion has existed surrounding the 2 versions. It’s not all that clear in the KB, but the file versions listed are 15.0.xx and not 16.0.xx. The added features and nonsecurity fixes, however seem relevant for the Lync 2013 version only, and not the Office 2016 Skype for Business client. It’s worth nothing that the security update relates to both Lync 2013 (including the Skype for Business “skin”), as well as the “real” Skype for Business client which is included in Office 2016.
